Nervous-system alignment
Is the work painful?
Pain is subjective, and the nervous system decides whether change feels safe or threatening. If
bodywork is too painful, the body can interpret it as trauma and resist the release. True,
sustainable healing requires shifting into the parasympathetic state — calm, safe, and open to
reorganization.
You may feel intensity — the familiar "hurts-so-good" sensation of therapeutic release. But
there's a big difference between therapeutic pain (which the body accepts) and survival pain
(which triggers fight-or-flight). I work closely with your breath and feedback to keep you in the
optimal window.
Sometimes the deepest restrictions feel almost numb or "offline." When fascia has been bound for
years, the nervous system may stop signaling from that area. You might feel very little at first
— then suddenly notice sensation return as the tissue reawakens. Clients often describe this as
parts of their body "coming back online."
